Gateways dropping connection - why? - any way to force a re-negotiation?

Solley Nov 13, 2016 08:43PM EST

I've got a setup with a couple of WiFi-2-IR GC units; one for the media closet and one for the TV/Soundbar.

From time to time, seemingly randomly, one of the two will drop link and show up as Red in the connection status within the iRule app. I'll be using the app, no issues, then a few minutes later I'll try to change channels and it won't work (red on one GC gateway). Waiting 5 to 30 minutes usually "fixes" it, but there's got to be a better way.

Restarting the app/rebooting the tablet doesn't guarantee the link returns, nor does cycling power on the GC unit.

Anyone know why this happens?

Anyone know of a way to "force" the app and the gateway to re-negotiate their interface?

Thanks!

What kind of WiFi network do you have? Are your SSIDs between 2.4 and 5ghz separated or unified?

Not sure I know how to answer the first question. My 2.4 and 5 have different SSID names.

So, more info that might help with a diagnosis...

I created a new handset for my new android phone, so I could control everything even when the kids have run off with my android tablet (that occasionally has the issue described above).

Tonight, I've had the connection troubles let with the tablet, but at the same time, had all green connection status with the cell phone. So...it seems the connection problem is isolated to the tablet hardware or software, as the router and GC devices are working with my phone without issue (at least right now).

Been having the same issue. I think that I fixed it (meaning - so far - so good). The issue was that my router was having IP conflicts.

What I did was set up my DHCP on my router to start high, like around 100. This will have the router to assign IP address starting at 100. EX: 192.168.1.100
Most of your devices and PCs use DHCP

Next - I assigned my Global Cache devices with IP address under 100. EX: 192.168.1.50
This is almost the same as reserving static IP addresses since the router will never assign IP address <100 and will prevent gateways to go down do to IP conflicts.

Safety Tip: Keep a list of all your static IP address and their device name. This will be useful incase your router gets wiped do to a firmware upgrade. Learned this the hard way.

Thanks, I'll give this a shot. I already don't allow DHCP to assign below .100, but I have assigned static to my GC boxes above 100 (.120, .130, .140). I would think that would avoid conflicts, but I'm certainly not a network guru.
